The precious gem of the Aegean
Santorini, or Thira, is the top destination in Greece and among the most romantic destinations in the Greek islands and also in the world. Located in the Aegean Sea, in the Cyclades islands, Santorini island was the site of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in the world and what remains today is a submerged volcano and a caldera. Amazing villages has been constructed on the edge of this caldera, with Cycladic architecture and breathtaking view to the sea. Apart from the fabulous caldera villages, Santorini Greece is also famous for the romantic sunset, the volcano and the luxurious resorts.
Two great civilizations have left their mark on Santorini: one belongs to prehistoric times and is apparent in what has been coming to light in the excavations at Akrotiri. The other is a Greek civilization represented by the ancient city located on Mesa Vouno. The ancient city at Akrotiri is not just the most important archaeological site on the island. But, thanks to its excellent state of preservation and the wealth of finds it has yielded, it is also the most important prehistoric settlement found anywhere in the Eastern Mediterranean. Akrotiri could be characterised as the prehistoric Pompeii of the Aegean.
The strategic position of the area attracted the Lacedaemonian colonisers of the island who founded their city utilizing the limestone rock of Mesa Vouno as a natural fortress. From the 9th century B.C. until the spread of Christianity, the city of Mesa Vouno was the only urban centre of the island.
The Castle of Oia is the most famous place for the sunset sightseeing! It is said that the best sunset view of Santorini can be seen from the Castle. Most of the visitors gather to the Castle area before the sunset preparing their cameras or embracing their beloved persons and gaze to the west waiting for the sun to start curving towards the sea.
Then, the sky seems to have been painted with various colors like yellow and orange which turn to pink and then purple as it gets dark and the sun becomes a small glittering dot in the very point where these colors meet each other, get mixed and turn to white! The scenery is incredible… Sometimes, the steam from the sea makes the atmosphere slightly dim as if wrapping it with a diaphanous veil.
Visit the volcano
Palea and Nea Kameni
Don’t miss the chance to visit the youngest land in the Eastern Mediterranean!
The two small islands in the centre of the Santorini caldera, Palea Kameni and Nea Kameni, “the volcano” according to the locals, are the youngest volcanic lands in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Palea Kameni (Old Burnt Island) is less than 2.000 years old, while Nea Kameni (Young Burnt Island) began to form only 450 years ago and its youngest lavas 67 years old (as per 2017). These two small islands are the result of the volcano’s most recent activity.
The island is famous for its products, which are highly sought after and famous worldwide due to its volcanic terrain. Which are the things you ought to try? Start from the split peas, served in a variety of ways, such as puree with onion, with eggplant, but also in soup. Continue with Santorini's most famous product, the cherry tomato, which you can purchase in different varieties to take with you. The white eggplant is another typical delicacy of Santorini, as well as capers and caper leaves.
In terms of sweets, do not miss koufeto (traditional wedding sweet) and melitinia (traditional sweet of Easter). Finally, it's no coincidence that Santorini's wine is considered among the world's best. Surrender to the charm of local wines and indulge in their flavours. You will find many shops, as well as restaurants, selling local products, from which you can buy all the treasures of Santorinian cuisine.
